Chelsea targeting United clash for Drogba

Thursday, September 8, 2011

Boss Andre Villas-Boas revealed the hitter would miss Saturday's trip to Sunderland and Tuesday's Champions League opener against Bayer Leverkusen.

Drogba is still struggling with the concussion he suffered within the 3-1 victory more than Norwich 11 days ago and Villas-Boas claimed the club would "drive it to the restrict" to ensure he had been available for the day at Old Trafford on Sunday week.

"He has to be authorised medically to help to make his full return to training," Villas-Boas stated. "He has been performing light sessions, of course, with our physios.

"Let us push it to the limit to try for him to be available for Man United.

"I wouldn't say he would be accessible for Leverkusen."

Villas-Boas added: "The very first days were, of program, tremendous pain, and he'd his family supporting him or her.

"He had complete support from the medical staff, who were with him 24-seven. And we've been getting this support in order to him.

"We just need to make sure that he's completely recovered before he returns to training because this is the requirement you have to do neurologically."

There was good news, otherwise, on the damage front for Villas-Boas, who confirmed goalkeeper Petr Cech will be accessible against Sunderland after making a quicker-than-expected recovery from his knee damage.

Defender David Luiz can also be back after missing the beginning of the season with a thigh problem.

Villas-Boas also said that the club are unlikely to make a renewed attempt to indication Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric when the move window opens in January.

Chelsea reportedly offered £40 million for the Croatia star, only to be informed that Spurs experienced no intention of selling.

When asked if Modric would again be a target in January, Villas-Boas replied: "No I do not think so. The market is closed and I won't speculate what happens within January."

Chelsea did sign Raul Meireles from Gatwick on transfer deadline day time to strengthen their options in midfield and Holiday villas-Boas is pleased with his new acquisition.

"We wanted to fill in a space in midfield and bring one more player in and Raul has that ability, he can play in the channels or even behind the strikers, and with what we wanted to achieve in terms of the playing style, Raul fits the requirements," Villas Boas said.

"Let me remind you he was voted Player of the growing season by the fans associated with Liverpool last season which means this was an extremely great deal for us and we are very happy to get him to here."
