The Turkish Grand Prix has been dropped from the 2012 Formula 1 calendar after the sport’s governing body confirmed a 20-race schedule for next season.
After several draft calendars, the FIA unanimously ratified the latest calendar which sees the Bahrain Grand Prix return in April after being axed in 2011, while the sport will return to the USA, at a newly-constructed circuit in Austin, Texas for the penultimate race in November.The Bahrain race, dropped last year after civil unrest in the Gulf kingdom, was originally scheduled for the opening race, but will now be the last of four fly-away races at the beginning of the season before the teams’ attention switches to Europe.
The US race had been pencilled in for a June date, but fears from local councillors over searing 40-degree heat meant the obvious choice was to move it until the end of the season.
The Indian Grand Prix has also returned to the end of the season after an early version had swapped it with China.
As well as 20 races, the 2012 calendar will also see a return to in-season testing, with teams agreeing last week to test at the Ferrari-owned Mugello circuit between races in Bahrain and Spain, while Jerez and Barcelona have been confirmed as the pre-season test venues.
